The story of this coffee

Every bean of Chania Estate coffee tells the story of a family tradition that has been going on in Kenya's Central Province since 1904. Unlike most Kenyan coffees, which go through a complex auction system, we buy this coffee directly from farmer Boyce Harries. Boyce is the 5th generation of a family dedicated to growing coffee with an emphasis on sustainability and excellence. Chania Estate is one of the last medium-sized farms in Kenya, allowing the family to have absolute control over the entire process - from planting to export. This direct relationship (Direct Trade) allows us to bring you coffee in its purest form, without unnecessary middlemen.

Growing and harvesting

Coffee grows on fertile red volcanic soil at an altitude of 1 525 m above sea level, which gives the beans their strength and characteristic density. It is a unique blend of varieties(French Mission, SL34, Ruiru 11, Batian and K7), which produces a much more layered flavour than is usual with conventional monovarietas.

Harvesting takes place entirely by hand between October and January, when only optimally ripe cherries are selected. Subsequent processing is carried out using the traditional wet method (Fully Washed): the cherries are fermented in clean water after peeling and then dried on African beds under direct sunlight. This precise process, combined with the rich terroir of the Thika region, ensures that Chania Estate coffee retains its exceptional purity, intense fruitiness and sweet caramel aftertaste.

Exceptional coffee with an exceptional score

Cupping score is a coffee quality score used to assess the flavour characteristics of coffee. To qualify as an exceptional coffee, a coffee must achieve a cupping score above 80 points.

In contrast, the commodity coffees you buy in supermarkets have a cupping score below 80 and are intended for mass production where quality is not the main criterion. These coffees focus more on productivity and price. The cupping score is a great tool to quickly get a feel for the quality of the coffee and its potential in flavour.

Suitable preparation

For maximum enjoyment, we recommend preparations that emphasize fruitiness and juicy acidity, such as V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave or Aeropress. We recommend a medium grind and fresh water for the best taste experience.
